{"id":1283,"date":"2007-05-24T14:15:46","date_gmt":"2007-05-24T18:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1283"},"modified":"2007-06-06T17:26:28","modified_gmt":"2007-06-06T21:26:28","slug":"harness-and-monitor-or-die","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1283","title":{"rendered":"Harness and Monitor or Die?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BrandWeek posted an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/aw\/index.jsp\">Adweek<\/a> piece earlier this month, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brandweek.com\/bw\/news\/recent_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003582701\">&#8220;Study: Cyber Presence Key to Sales&#8221; (Link)<\/a>, that should be of interest to a wide range of people; not just brand advertisers and marketers. In particular, I found this excerpt relevant to many of the virtual world\/product development topics I cover here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We are absolutely certain that marketing must urgently harness interactive media and the behaviors it induces. &#8230; Consumers expect every brand or service to present itself in some kind of online environment, and expect this presence to be of use or interest and to furnish a substantial or involving <strong>experience<\/strong>,&#8221; the study says. That experience lies at the heart of consumer <strong>engagement<\/strong>, one of the four &#8220;pillars&#8221; that the study lays out as a general framework for effective online marketing.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe other key pillars, per the study, are reach, <strong>reputation<\/strong> and transaction. Reach remains a prime communication objective, it states, and &#8220;brand advertisers in particular need digital media to replace audience they are losing in traditional media, and to add frequency against light television viewers.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While interesting, there&#8217;s something about this article that rubs me the wrong way. I&#8217;ll return to that in a moment. In the meantime, I&#8217;ve highlighted words I believe are especially noteworthy. I don&#8217;t feel like an animal. And I certainly don&#8217;t appreciate the idea of being monitored like a criminal.<\/p>\n<p>Is it any wonder why so many advertising and marketing agencies can&#8217;t figure consumers out? especially if they&#8217;re reading these reports and industry rags? It&#8217;s like plantation owners trying to understand why slaves want freedom.<\/p>\n<p>Well, here&#8217;s some advice: <strong>If you don&#8217;t respect consumers and treat them as equals, they&#8217;ll sense it and they&#8217;ll rebel.
