{"id":1337,"date":"2007-07-02T19:45:37","date_gmt":"2007-07-02T23:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1337"},"modified":"2007-07-13T13:37:40","modified_gmt":"2007-07-13T17:37:40","slug":"age-of-ignorance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1337","title":{"rendered":"Age of Ignorance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just wanted to point out an excellent article on the Guardian, <a href=\"http:\/\/observer.guardian.co.uk\/review\/story\/0,,2115519,00.html\">&#8220;The new age of ignorance&#8221; (Link)<\/a>. It&#8217;s a great piece that&#8217;s worth taking the time to read. For example, it includes this important and worthwhile point:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nOrdinary people have to keep up. In the world we live in, the new economy, you have to become scientifically literate or you will fall quickly from view.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThere are plenty more observations, as well, but of course my favorite bit is this comment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We no longer make and mend, so we no longer know how anything works.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course we&#8217;re starting to see a possible change in the status quo as evidenced by all the &#8220;How To&#8221; websites and the popularity of something like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makezine.com\/\">Make:<\/a> magazine. But then again, we may not be seeing a rapid increase in numbers of &#8220;makers&#8221; so much as the rapid forming of large communities of previously <em>unconnected<\/em> makers.<\/p>\n<p>I tend to think it&#8217;s a combination of the two, but I certainly hope and expect we&#8217;ll see a steady increase in the number of people who &#8220;make and mend&#8221;.
