{"id":1358,"date":"2007-08-03T11:45:21","date_gmt":"2007-08-03T15:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1358"},"modified":"2008-01-17T17:22:00","modified_gmt":"2008-01-17T22:22:00","slug":"virtual-worlds-stuff-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1358","title":{"rendered":"Virtual Worlds Stuff Round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s plenty of stuff to discuss on the general topic of virtual worlds, but under the circumstances &#8211; that being I&#8217;ve not posted many entries over the past couple of weeks &#8211; I&#8217;m just going to post some links in no particular order and add a short comment to each.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2007\/07\/26\/google-earth-enterprise\/\"><strong>Google Earth Enterprise Version Update Released<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; this wouldn&#8217;t normally catch my attention, but combine my earlier post (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1354\">reLink<\/a>) with <a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/news.ars\/post\/20070802-not-one-gphone-but-many-in-the-works-report.html\">breaking news concerning the gPhone (Link)<\/a> and this upgrade takes on some potential relevance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2007\/07\/31\/myabodo\/\"><strong>MyAbodo is Cyworld for Green Living<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; funny how this coincides with <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2007\/08\/01\/treehugger-acquired\/\">Treehugger&#8217;s acquisition by the Discovery Channel&#8217;s parent company (Link)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtualworldsnews.com\/2007\/08\/virtualworldsne.html\"><strong>VirtualWorldsNews Interview: Hui Xu, HiPiHi Founder and CEO<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; more talk of 3D web standards. I&#8217;m betting the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.web3d.org\/\">Web3D.org<\/a> folks are fuming. I also got a chuckle out of Suezanne&#8217;s comment&#8230; as if.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/conversationstarter.hbsp.com\/2007\/07\/the_demise_of_second_life.html\"><strong>The Demise of Second Life?<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; there&#8217;s been so much crap written about Second Life lately it&#8217;s refreshing to hear someone like Paul Hemp air a little common sense. It&#8217;s certainly better than what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longtail.com\/the_long_tail\/2007\/07\/why-i-gave-up-o.html\">Wired&#8217;s Chris Anderson had to say (Link)<\/a>. Be sure to read the comments on Anderson&#8217;s blog though; some excellent points are raised&#8230; though of course if you&#8217;re reading my blog not all of them will be new.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2007\/07\/31\/wikia-playxpert\/\"><strong>Wikia &#038; Playxpert Offer In-Game Wiki Widget<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; this is a cool development. I could definitely see something like this meshing nicely with educational uses for virtual worlds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/eightbar.co.uk\/2007\/08\/03\/avatar-meets-ar-with-artag\/\"><strong>Avatar meets AR with ARTag<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; this is pretty sweet. It also reminds me of some comments exchanged on a recent post (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1353\">reLink<\/a>). I&#8217;ll be taking a closer look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artag.net\/\">ARTag<\/a> (which reminds me of Reactable and SLorpedo &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1324\">reLink<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2007\/08\/02\/multiverse-platform\/\"><strong>Multiverse Launches Platform for Creation of MMOGs<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Mashable&#8217;s headline is a bit deceptive imo since, as we all know, Multiverse&#8217;s platform has been available for development for some time&#8230; even if it wasn&#8217;t &#8220;1.0&#8221;. This is, however, a noteworthy milestone. Also covered elsewhere: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.virtualworldsnews.com\/2007\/08\/multiverse-goes.html\">Virtual World News (Link)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raphkoster.com\/2007\/08\/02\/multiverse-goes-10\/\">Raph Koster&#8217;s blog (Link)<\/a> among the one&#8217;s I&#8217;ve read.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shacknews.com\/featuredarticle.x?id=489\"><strong>Mod is Dead: Beyond the Red Line<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I became aware of this <strike>mod<\/strike> total conversion only a few months ago. The intellectual property issue &#8211; they&#8217;re building a new, fan-initiated videogame using the enormously popular but essentially dead Battlestar Galactica property (series is set to end this season) &#8211; is of particular interest to me. This is one I&#8217;d like to see get the Coca-Cola treatment (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1335\">reLink<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2007\/08\/01\/disney-acquires-club-penguin\/\"><strong>Extremely Happy Feet: Disney Acquires Club Penguin For Up To $700 million<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; just another day in the Acquisitions department.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluesnews.com\/cgi-bin\/board.pl?action=viewthread&#038;threadid=79625\"><strong>CryENGINE 2 for Entropia<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;ll admit I&#8217;ve mostly panned the stories regarding Entropia&#8217;s push into China (maybe it&#8217;s the &#8220;sweat collecting&#8221; activities newbies have to endure that&#8217;s affecting my behavior), but this one is too interesting to ignore. However, like I&#8217;m sure many others have mentioned, is the target user&#8217;s machine ready for the graphics challenge? is the download going to balloon? I don&#8217;t know. Guess we&#8217;ll see. The engine has certainly impressed me (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1212\">reLink<\/a>). Wonder if this has anything to do with the earlier news regarding IMAGTP (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=1160\">reLink<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/gadgets\/miscellaneous\/news\/2007\/07\/wiimote\"><strong>Wii + Second Life = New Training Simulator<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Wired swings both ways&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/techbiz\/media\/magazine\/15-08\/ff_sheep\">apparently (Link)<\/a>. Well, ad revenue is ad revenue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/radar.oreilly.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/sharkrunners_re.html\"><strong>Sharkrunners: Realtime Data Used for a Game<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; if this had been my article, I&#8217;d have used the phrase &#8220;Realtime, <em>Real World<\/em> Data&#8221; since I find that to be a key idea worth calling attention to. Of course Forrest&#8217;s comment in the piece was what really sticks: &#8220;<em>As sensor networks increase, I think that we can expect more games like this to appear.<\/em>&#8221; Had I taken the time to post something earlier, I might have used an example such as a game where players have to monitor an oil containment buoy&#8217;s sensors in order to effectively direct its proper placement thus ensuring maximum containment (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rebang.com\/csven\/Kirkyan.htm\">reLink<\/a>), or monitor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/n\/a\/2007\/08\/03\/national\/a024425D44.DTL\">tiny sensors on a bridge (Link)<\/a> and determine the best way to improve the overall infrastructure given limited resources.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/07\/28\/arts\/television\/28vide.html?_r=3&#038;adxnnl=1&#038;oref=slogin&#038;ref=technology&#038;adxnnlx=1185640270-pMH3kyDqKAtTly9\/VpKUsA&#038;oref=slogin&#038;oref=slogin\"><strong>Video Game Matches to Be Televised on CBS<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I would have liked to have seen this but as I was traveling I didn&#8217;t get the opportunity. Personally, I think this will start to take off. Between the kids who&#8217;ve grown up with the technology and the seniors who are embracing it (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/culture\/lifestyle\/news\/2007\/08\/sexdrive_0803\">and maybe each other &#8211; Link<\/a>), I&#8217;d say this is as interesting as some <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.yahoo.com\/question\/index?qid=20070726115116AAaWtEN\">reality show about two has-been Cory&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theaustralian.news.com.au\/story\/0,25197,22161037-28737,00.html\"><strong>Virtual terrorists<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; so idiotic it must be ad-bait. And for anyone thinking it might be a real concern, bottom line: for now, it&#8217;d be more effective to mod a more realistic videogame and run a <em>private<\/em> training server than use the very public Second Life.
