As with my previous entry, this is in no particular order and I&#8217;ll keep this to links and short comments.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.fastcompany.com\/archives\/2007\/07\/26\/proving_the_value_of_design.html?partner=rss\"><strong>Proving the Value of Design<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; This is like some political topics: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/magazine\/112\/open_next-essay.html\">it never seems to go away<\/a>. I would have enjoyed it more if this had been a round table interview with other design disciplines represented, but you take what you can get.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wolfram.com\/2007\/08\/the_space_of_all_possible_bridge.html\"><strong>The Space of All Possible Bridge Shapes<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;m not convinced generative design solves everything, but I do think it can help solve a lot of engineering design problems. Reminded me of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genometri.com\/\">the 3D plug-in Genometri (Link) <\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/reveries.com\/?p=1186\"><strong>Feature Creep<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Yep. If the competition comes out with a 15-button blender, lots of people (you know who you are) want to introduce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaweekend.com\/02_issues\/021117\/021117techsmart.html\">a 16-button product<\/a>. Even Dante was afraid to describe the part of Hell we designers have created for people who force development teams down this path.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/4520-13601_1-6757360-1.html?tag=intro\"><strong>Tech design&#8217;s new philosophy<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; nice follow-on to the featuritis piece above. I have to wonder though: between the &#8220;Tech&#8221; tag in the headline and entrenched attitudes in the field, will this so-called new philosophy move beyond the Apple&#8217;s and Google&#8217;s of the world&#8230; in the near term? Wish I could say definitively that it will, but I&#8217;m not so sure. It&#8217;s still frosting and gravy to a whole lot of companies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.metropolismag.com\/cda\/story.php?artid=2870\"><strong>Design as Business Fodder<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;ve been meaning to mention <em>Metropolis<\/em>&#8216; interview with former Apple design director and now former Pentagram partner Robert Brunner. As I&#8217;ve said before, I preferred Apple&#8217;s forms back when he was running the show, so I&#8217;ll be looking forward to seeing what his new business develops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/08\/04\/arts\/design\/04voya.html?ei=5088&#038;en=d45ad2fb06c37cd7&#038;ex=1343880000&#038;adxnnl=1&#038;partner=rssnyt&#038;emc=rss&#038;adxnnlx=1186237921-G5TPupqggLxGYDZ\/7oyT7A\"><strong>An Artist and His Sub Surrender in Brooklyn<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; when I grew up, reading Jules Verne&#8217;s tales and history books about early submarines was a favorite pastime, so the author of this <em>New York Time<\/em>&#8216;s article has me at the headline. Of greater interest to those who don&#8217;t share my affinity for submersibles is how little this guy actually knew about what he was doing. Stupid, but inspiring nonetheless. Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makezine.com\/blog\/archive\/2007\/08\/nyc_maker_makes_1775_subm.html\">Make: blog for more (Link)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/technology\/6923028.stm\"><strong>Swifts inspire morphing-wing plane<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; you all should know by now that anything related to aerospace engineering <em>and<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/mech-eng\/biomimetics\/about.htm\">biomimetics<\/a> is going to get my attention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/07\/15\/business\/yourmoney\/15proto.html?ei=5088&#038;en=1fab98231b3ca9dd&#038;ex=1342152000&#038;adxnnl=1&#038;partner=rssnyt&#038;emc=rss&#038;adxnnlx=1185019419-h5lwOzCQ2IZ5V5ZouQS6AA\"><strong>A Patent Is Worth Having, Right? Well, Maybe Not<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; There&#8217;s been plenty of online talk about patent reform; from a recent <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> piece (interesting read but hidden behind paid access, sorry) to the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/radar.oreilly.com\/archives\/2007\/06\/peertopatent_he.html\">Peer-to-Patent efforts<\/a>. I&#8217;m linking this one because it&#8217;s the most relevant to me as a designer and because it&#8217;s an ongoing discussion that I believe is worth tracking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/Articles\/300928\/Cyclists+can+breathe+more+easily+.htm\"><strong>Cyclists can breathe more easily<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; not only a sensible product (imo) but I appreciated that a site called &#8220;The Engineer Online&#8221; carried it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2007\/08\/time_running_ou.php\"><strong>Time Running Out For Shed Spot Competition<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I caught an earlier mention of this competition <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2007\/07\/shed_design_com.php\">on Treehugger (Link)<\/a> and at that time collected another couple of shed-related links: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.treehugger.com\/files\/2007\/07\/the_orb_has_lan.php\">&#8220;The Orb Has Landed&#8221; (Link)<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shedworking.co.uk\/\">Shedworking blog (Link)<\/a> which has plenty of cool stuff. Anyway, take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thespotbrief.com\/gallery.php\">the current competition entries &#8211; Link<\/a>. Fun stuff. Also worth mentioning, Core77 had a recent, related entry that&#8217;s pretty cool: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.core77.com\/blog\/object_culture\/green_houses_that_stand_up_to_quakes_6940.asp\">&#8220;Green houses that stand up to &#8216;quakes&#8221; (Link)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/autos.yahoo.com\/articles\/geneva_auto_show_2007\/58\/Bertone-Roadster-Concept\/\"><strong>Bertone Roadster Concept<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; when I was a kid I had a die-cast 386 Bertone Barchetta toy car. This new toy reminds me of that old thing. Only thing is, I can only afford the Corgi. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/feeds\/ap\/2007\/08\/02\/ap3983720.html\">With the lead paint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2007\/07\/31\/ceramic_pinhole_came.html\"><strong>Ceramic pinhole camera<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; As someone who once tried to make a set of ceramic &#8220;spider&#8221; speakers, it goes without saying I&#8217;m partial to the material. But this rocks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB118478339116070577.html?mod=googlenews_wsj\"><strong>GM Design Chief Talks Competition And the Merits of American Design<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; with American car manufacturers now holding onto something like 48% of the American market, I figure I&#8217;d be remiss if I didn&#8217;t post something&#8230; anything&#8230; about American automotive design. And Welburn&#8217;s last answer gives me <em>some<\/em> hope.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/2300-1041_3-6196265.html?tag=nefd.gallery\"><strong>A mouse that waves<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;m not sure if the form is appropriate, but I&#8217;d like to try this thing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.core77.com\/reactor\/08.07_userdesigned.asp\"><strong>The Future of &#8220;User-Designed&#8221;: How one company worked with end-users to design their perfect product<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; not exactly my idea of &#8220;user-designed&#8221;, but a decent article none-the-less. Best part: &#8220;<em>All but three of the students in this contest resorted to ideas they were comfortable with; ideas that were similar or even identical to the units they were allowed to take home and evaluate.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/innovate\/content\/jul2007\/id20070730_004030.htm?chan=innovation_innovation+%2B+design_top+stories\"><strong>The Relentless Lisa Strausfeld<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; impressive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d mentioned elsewhere that I should probably post a couple more &#8220;round-up&#8221; posts, so here&#8217;s an additional one primarily concerning Industrial Design.
