{"id":680,"date":"2006-02-16T11:49:38","date_gmt":"2006-02-16T16:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=680"},"modified":"2006-02-20T09:18:28","modified_gmt":"2006-02-20T14:18:28","slug":"less-ivy-more-moss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=680","title":{"rendered":"Less Ivy, More Moss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via C|Net (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/New+MIT+Media+Lab+head+roots+for+grassroots\/2100-1008_3-6040366.html?tag=nefd.top\" target=\"blank\">Link<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Technology innovations are more likely to come from someone&#8217;s living room than from the corporate boardroom or even an entrepreneur&#8217;s garage, says Frank Moss, the newly named director of the MIT Media Lab.<\/p>\n<p>The Massachusetts Institute of Technology announced Wednesday that Moss is heading its Media Lab.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n But in his mind, technology users are increasingly setting the direction of inventions, rather than corporate research labs or venture capital-funded start-ups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think a lot of innovation will come from a different place. It will trickle down further so that innovation will come from the consumer, whereas in the past they were the recipient&#8221; of new technologies, Moss said Wednesday.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nThe MIT Media Lab will continue doing research in a number of areas, as it already does. But Moss said that he would like to have participants take their ideas beyond the &#8220;demo,&#8221; or demonstration, phases.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Moss thinks that the Media Lab should be involved in making prototypes, which will help the lab make a broader impact. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like this guy already. It&#8217;s a long way from a $100 Laptop demo the previous director has been promoting to an actual prototype&#8230; as I mentioned in an earlier post (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.rebang.com\/?p=430\" target=\"blank\">Link<\/a>). Sounds like MIT has someone in charge who groks that.
