A Dark Spotlight Shines on Second Life

Well this has been a long time in coming. Things should get interesting. I’ve left my comments on YouTube and suggest you read everyone’s comments over there – Link.

  1. Makes you wonder if they did it on purpose, if you think about it. Set up next to some sex parcels and you have perfect material.

Interesting thought. Maybe this whole presidential campaign will be one example after another of volunteer doing something Web 2.0 and their candidates having to apologize or denounce it..

Still, this hurts SL pretty bad.

  2. I’d not even considered that the neighboring plots were rigged. Possible. When I logged in last night to go have a look the “search” functions weren’t functioning. But that leads to another question: is the Edwards volunteer really there to support Edwards? This may have been an even more elaborate smear.

  3. That this is a smear is made all the more likely by the network in question.

Look at the buildup to the invocation of St. Rudy of Giuliani. That was suspicious. And the crescendo at the end, calling on Edwards to (more or less) support regulation of SL content.

I now wonder if the supposed “trashing” of Edwards HQ wasn’t part of some elaborate attention getting stunt.

Still, this is worse for Edwards than it is for SL. If Fox thinks that allegations of sex and corruption will drive people away from SL, they have seriously misjudged human consciousness. Still, it’s unlikely that SL was Fox’s target at all here.

  4. Of course Fox’s involvement raises suspicians, but as I said on YouTube, I think Edward’s can turn this around and ask: “Where are the holier-than-thou conservatives? Why aren’t they confronting these issues head-on if they’re truly concerned about family values?” Consequently, I’m unsure if this will hurt Edwards. We’ll have to see how this plays out.

As for driving people away from SL, I suspect we’ll see a growth in resident numbers as a result (which may actually be a bad thing considering the grid stress issues).

Oh well. So much for the March slowdown I was anticipating.
