Steampunk Timepieces

There is, apparently, an ever-increasing interest in all things Steampunk. I’ll confess my own affection for the stuff, but I’ve had an interest in such things since reading Jules Verne stories in grade school. On the other hand, I have to wonder how much of today’s popularity is driven by what I assume to be the publics’ general sense of being overwhelmed by an avalanche of modern technology. Things used to be so much simpler, didn’t they?

The watch above, one of a collection of similar pieces you can view online (Link), may be complex in form but it’s a visible complexity and thus, probably to most people, a bit more open and friendly; not like technology that hides inside stuff so we can’t see it with our own eyes. Like… nuclear power plants.

  1. FYI: If you would like a painless inside look at nuclear power (which has lots of steam in it) see my novel “Rad Decision”. It is available online at no cost at http://RadDecision.blogspot.com and is also in paperback. Reader reviews are on the homepage – and they seem to like it. Stewart Brand, founder of “The Whole Earth Catalog” has also endorsed it. I’ve worked in the US nuclear industry over twenty years, and I have tried to provide an entertaining look at the technology, people and politics of this wacky energy source.

I’m not sure, but I get the feeling you missed the joke.

Not only am I familiar with nuclear power, some of my old engineering classmates and fellow Naval Officers at Notre Dame teach (or taught) classes at the Navy’s Nuclear Power School.

You have to read the whole entry to get the joke.
